The Rottweiler is a medium to large dog. They are a robust and powerful dog. They are a mainly black color with clear rust markings. The substantial build shows that this dog has excellent strength, endurance, and agility. This dog requires extensive training and socialization from early puppy-hood.
You probably have heard and often have seen this dog in movies and television portrayed as a violent, aggressive and dangerous dog. Despite this popular misconception, they are loving breed and an excellent choice as a pet. As with all dog breeds, if they are left alone for a long time and do not get enough exercise, they will become destructive and show signs of mental distress.
This oldest herding breed is originally bred to herding livestock. Regardless of their reputation, the Rottie should never be tied and chained and separated from people for a long time period since it can develop destructive and anxious behaviors.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Rottweiler in 1931. This medium energy dog is often used as a rescue-and-search dog, a guide dog for the blind, a police dog, and a more obvious role portrayed in popular culture, a guard dog. This dog is considered a working dog, according to its breeding group.
Appearance
These dogs have a double coat with short, straight, and coarse hair. The outer coat is a medium length, being shorter around the ears, head, and legs. The undercoat is generally found in the neck and thigh area. The length of the coat highly depends on the weather and climate where they live. In general, the Rottie is black with rust to mahogany markings around its eyes, cheek, each side of its muzzle, leg, chest, and under its tail. Some also have tan lines which look like pencil marks on their toes.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is also highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and breeder to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure the health and lifespan. Also, it is important to make sure availability of clean and fresh water.
Grooming
This dog requires brushing with a firm bristle brush to get rid of dead hair as well as distribute skin oils. They will shed twice a year and during this time you will need to brush their hair even more frequently to keep the loose hair under control. They need occasional baths; also, they need frequent teeth brushing twice to three times a week to prevent growing bacteria and to remove tartar in their mouth. If you have time, everyday brushing is better to prevent bad breath and gum disease.
Exercise
The Rottweiler is considered a medium energy dog, which means that they need frequent exercise such as jogging or long walks to keep their mental and physical faculties in good health. Obedience training is also recommended starting at an early age and continuing throughout their life.
Pet Crate Size
Pet Crates Direct recommends 48” dog crates* for most adult Rottweilers.
