Introduction
The Irish Wolfhound is a dog breed that originated from Ireland.
It belongs to the giant dog group and according to its name, this dog was usually used to hunt wolves.
This is one of the oldest breeds in Ireland with evidence of them existing since 7000 BC!
This dog is really strong and looks scary because of its coat.
Nowadays, this dog is used as a companion dog or as a guardian of its owner.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Irish Wolfhound in 1897.
These medium energy dogs are known as active, calm, courageous, kindly, and dignified dogs.
These breeds are not good with other dogs, so the owner should supervise them.
They may be good with children but the owners still need to supervise them.
These breeds may also bark when they want to, depending on the situation.
Appearance
The Irish Wolfhound has a large and high body.
It is built with strong bones and muscles.
At first glance, this dog really looks frightening and wild, but when you get close to it, you will notice that this dog has a kind energy.
In general, the adult male Irish Wolfhound may reach up to 32 inches high (30 inches high for the female). It may also weigh about 105 – 120 pounds.
The coat color options available are black, red, gray, brindle, and fawn.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
Regular grooming may be necessary to keep the coat clean.
You can provide regular bathing and clean the dog’s coat with a brush and then use a comb to make it tidy.
It can be a bit challenging to groom this dog, but it can also be so much fun and is a great bonding opportunity.
The nails may grow fast so you need to cut them regularly to prevent it from cracking.
You also need to check the ears frequently to avoid infection as well as performing regular teeth brushing.
Exercise
This medium energy dog has a large size that needs a bigger space to exercise. 30-60 minutes of daily exercise is recommended.
You are not recommended to train the dog inside the house but you can take it to your backyard or other spacious areas.
You can also bring the dog to join an obedience competition but you need to train the dog on a regular basis so that it will have a good performance.
