Introduction

The Greyhound is known as an ancient dog breed. Its breeding history can be traced back to 3000 years ago in Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Persia where we can see them a lot depicted as statues, sculptures, or paintings.

In the past, only the rich elite was allowed to own the Greyhound. Anyone who was responsible for their death would be executed. Thankfully, it is not like that anymore as most people can have this breed today.

The Greyhound is originally bred for coursing. This sighthound breed relies on its sight instead of scent to chase prey like rabbits. Moreover, their 270-degree vision enables them to see what’s behind them without turning their head.

Besides coursing, people use this dog for Greyhound racing too. It is not surprising since it is the fastest dog in the world. They are able to run up to 45mph!

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Greyhound in 1885.

These medium energy dogs are known as gentle, noble, and independent. Although they are gentle, they can become intense when they are running.

When they have nothing to do, they can become quite lazy in the house. Here they will prefer to stretch out, lay down on the sofa, and sleep. This relaxing activity can save their energy so they can be ready for their next running routine.

The size of the Greyhound is quite big, but that does not impede them from wanting to sit on your lap. Speaking of sitting, this dog does not enjoy the sitting position even though they can do it. Instead, they prefer to stand or lay down. They also have an issue with swimming, but you can give them a lesson about it so they can do it well later or as needed.

Appearance

In terms of size, the male Greyhound is a bit bigger than the female. The dimensions of the males are 28-30 inches tall and 65-70 pounds. For the female, they come in 27-28 inches tall with a weight of 60-65 pounds.

Their skull is relatively long with an elongated muzzle.

They have long, slim and powerful legs which provide them with remarkable speed.

Their fur is very short and easy to maintain. There are 30 recognized colors of the Greyhound’s coat with some examples including brindle, black, fawn, white, red and gray, etc.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

The short and smooth coat of the Greyhound’s only requires a little maintenance with weekly grooming and the occasional bath.

Exercise

This dog is born to run as fast as they want. So, running is the best exercise for them. But, there is no need to ask them to run all the time. They are still house dogs which enjoy relaxing on the couch.  30-60 minutes of daily exercise is recommended for the Greyhound.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends a 48" dog crate* for most adult Greyhounds.
