Introduction
The Anatolian Shepherd is a breed originating in Turkey. As is in its name, the Anatolian Shepherd dog is from the Anatolian region, and then was developed in the US.
This breed is really big and powerful.
It also has superior hearing and eyes, bred to protect livestock.
Since it has great speed and skill, this dog is able to defeat predators with high efficiency.
This dog is about 140 lbs (65 kg) in weight for males and 120 lbs (55 kg) in weight for females. It can reach up to 32 inches (81 cm) in height.
This dog is really good for keeping livestock such as lambs and cows. Today this dog is also used as a companion dog to protect its owner’s house from danger.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Anatolian Shepherd in 1996.
These medium energy dogs are known as independent, reserved, loyal, protective, watchful, smart, and intelligent.
This dog is also good with children but the owner still needs to supervise it and provide appropriate obedience training. When dealing with other dogs, this dog may not be so good.
Appearance
As mentioned, this dog has a large body and powerful muscles.
Though it has medium energy, it is able to fight off dangerous predators.
The Anatolian Shepherd has a coat that is not too thick with a long tail curved downwards.
The color options available are white, liver, blue fawn, brown, red fawn, and combination.
In general, this dog has a sharp expression as if it is ready to attack its enemy.
Its ears are small and cover its holes.
The eyes look tiny but they are very sharp.
It has a big black mouth that is ready to bite predators threatening its livestock.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
Since this dog has a large size, regular grooming may be important, especially when dealing with its coat. Owners can use a brush to clean debris on the body and then use a comb to make it tidy.
It also needs to take a bath as its activity demands. The more rigorous its work, the more it will need to be cleaned.
Owners should check its ears frequently to make sure they are free of wax and debris because debris can cause infection in some cases.
The nails need to be trimmed regularly to avoid cracking and overgrowth.
The teeth must also be brushed on a regular basis to keep it clean.
Exercise
The Anatolian Shepherd is a smart and responsive dog that requires between 20-60 minutes of daily exercise.
It is protective and watchful. That’s why Anatolian Shepherd is a good guardian dog or a protector, especially in protecting livestock.
It is not an in-house dog and it should have an outdoor crate, depending on climate it may need more or less shelter from the elements.
Owners can train this dog to provide protection. It is not only able to protect livestock, but it can also protect territory such as your home or property.
