Introduction
There is not much known about the origin of the Smooth Fox Terriers. It is believed that this dog breed was started in England in the early of 19th century.
There were several breeds thought to be used in the breeding process. They are the Beagle, English Toy Terrier, Pointer, Old English Bulldog, and even Dalmatian.
It was not until 1870 when the Smooth Fox Terrier finally emerged, and not until 1885 when the AKC officially recognized the breed standard.
The purpose of the breeding course was primarily for fox hunting. Most hunters at that time needed small dogs with a strong prey drive to chase small animals into burrows. They make excellent watchdogs.
The Smooth Fox Terrier had the ability to drive the foxes out of their den. By the end of the 18th century, this dog was bred so it had longer legs for better speed.
Unfortunately, this size increase became too big, which made it losing this hunting purpose.
Common health concerns are lens luxation (eye lens dislocation), and patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation).
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Fox Terrier group in 1885.
These medium energy dogs are known as active and stubborn. They like to dig and scratch furniture.
They often run around the house, especially outside. It is important to install fences around your house. Otherwise, they may run away and possibly never come back.
It might be difficult to have this dog living with other small pets.
Since they were bred for hunting, there is a chance that they will hunt those pets. But, despite the potential for behavioral issues, this dog is still a wonderful pet for families.
They love playing with children. Their cheerful personality can brighten up your mood. An appropriate solution for problematic behavior is to give them obedience training early.
Appearance
There are 2 separate breeds: the Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier.
At first, American Kennel Club considered it the same breed. But, in 1984, they decided to separate them into two different breeds.
The Smooth Fox Terrier's coat is short. These white dogs have brown markings on them.
The head is long and shaped like a wedge. The eyes are dark-colored, and the ears are V-shaped.
The range of the weight is 15-19 pounds, and the height is 14-15.5 inches.
The Wire Fox Terrier has a double coat which is hard and crisp. The underneath feels rough but is meant to protect against the cold.
The fur is so dense that you cannot see or feel its skin. In addition, the fur has a twisted style, not curly.
Similar to the Smooth Fox Terrier, it has small dark eyes and V-shaped ears.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide dog food formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to prevent any health problems, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
Although the Smooth Fox Terrier has short fur, weekly brushing is recommended.
An occasional bath will keep your dog clean and looking great.
Teeth should be brushed often, nails regularly trimmed to avoid cracking, and ears checked to avoid wax buildup or debris that may lead to infection.

Since the Fox Terrier is an active sporting breed, you can take them out and let them explore. But, make sure to do it under your supervision.
