Introduction

The origin of the German Pinscher is, well Germany. It used to be known as the Smooth-haired Pinscher.

This breed was first mentioned in dog books in 1884. But, there were also drawings of similar dogs that date back to 1780.

The source of German Pinscher breeding was traced back to 1836, though. At that time, the German Pinscher surpassed the popularity of other breeds called Mops and the Pug.

In the past, people owned a Pinscher as a working dog. This breed is also able to work as a guard dog to protect homes. It is effective as a ratter.

In fact, this dog is a natural-born ratter, which will chase vermin according to its own instinct. So there is no need to train this dog for such a purpose.

By looking at its appearance, it may look similar to the Doberman. Both are actually distant relatives. That being said, the German Pinscher has closer relations with the Standard Schnauzer.

It is also said that the Miniature Pinscher has lineage from the German Pinscher.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the German Pinscher in 2003. These high energy dogs are known as friendly and loving family companions.

It also has an even temperament. This dog is also very active to the point of being called vivacious. But, it will typically not bark unless it is necessary. They make excellent watchdogs.

We must remind you that this dog is born to be a natural vermin hunter with a deep instinct. So, it would be wise to not to leave them outside with no fences around the house.

Otherwise, your pet may lose itself running after vermin. The German Pinscher is highly intelligent and dog owners will not find any difficulties in training them.

We must tell you, though, that this breed does not like overly repetitive training.

A common health problem is hip dysplasia.

Appearance

The German Pinscher is a medium-sized dog. It has a very elegant appearance with a strong and muscular body posture.

This breed is powerful. It mostly comes with a shiny black coat and light brown markings. But, you can still find them in other colors like fawn, red, tan or blue.

During both World Wars, there were German Pinschers in colors like solid black, salt and pepper, and Harlequin as well.

Unfortunately, these colors became extinct due to these wars. The average height of this dog breed is 17-20 inches, weighing between 25-45 pounds.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide dog food formulated to medium-sized breeds. Adequate nutrition, paired with exercise, will help avoid some health issues. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

The short coat of the German Pinscher requires weekly grooming and a little brushing to maintain its shiny look. Since this dog is not very fond of water, you can bathe them occasionally.

Exercise

This dog is very active, enthusiastic, and athletic. You can give them daily exercise for up to several hours so they can release their high energy.

Long walks and runs are good choices, plus plenty of play in your fenced yard.

They have a strong prey drive, so be mindful around small animals.
