Clumber Spaniel dogs were first bred in the United Kingdom. It is one of the largest in the Spaniel breeding group. They got their name from where they originate: Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire. It is believed that Duc de Noailles of France shipped his Spaniels to the Duke of Newcastle in England during the French Revolution, but very little evidence supports this theory.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Clumber Spaniel in 1884. These medium energy dogs are known as amusing, yet mellow, as well as gentlemanly and amiable. They specialize in hunting in heavy cover.
In 1884, they became one of the first ten breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club and now is ranked as 144th most popular dog breed as of 2016. They are now considered so rare that if you want to get one you will likely be put on a waiting list.
Appearance
Female Clumber Spaniels can weigh between 55-70 pounds and up to 17-19 inches in height. Males can weigh between 70-85 pounds and up to 18-20 inches in height. They have a long, yet low body, massive bones, and solid feet. They have an expression that can be described as pensive, but as a gun dog, their enthusiasm to work and play at the same time shines through.
People quite often mistake the Clumber Spaniel with the Sussex Spaniel due to their similar appearance, but the Sussex Spaniel is smaller. The AKC recognizes the white Clumber Spaniels with orange or lemon markings.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
Clumber Spaniels are not for OCD sufferers or neat-freaks as they shed a lot. Daily brushing is needed to remove their dead hairs. They have a soft, medium length white colored coat, which makes dirt or mud easily seen. Bathe them as often as you want and don’t forget to trim the hair on their rear legs, tail, and between the pad of their legs. As with other breeds, trim their nails to avoid painful cracking, check their ears for debris to prevent infection, and brush their teeth regularly.
Exercise
They prefer long walks over running. They are considered intelligent and independent, which makes them very trainable. Leaving them to play with children is 100% okay. Clumber Spaniels can socialize well and are good manner with other dogs, even without their owner’s supervision. They only require moderate exercise, with at least 30 minutes a day being adequate.
Clumber Spaniels have strong hunting instincts so they often smell and chase things. They also like to chew or carrying things in their mouth so provide chewable toys or dental bones.
