Introduction
Chinook dogs are not for lazy owners.
They are now considered a rare breed of sled dog.
Chinooks were developed in the New Hampshire state in the 20th century and have since become the official state dog of New Hampshire.
The Chinook breed is a result of crossbreeding between Husky stock with Mastiff-like breeds.
They are now kept as family pets for companionship.
Chinooks bark rarely but they are very talkative in expressing their opinions by “woo-wooing” or whining.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Chinooks in 2010.
These medium energy dogs are known as smart and have a willingness to please their family.
Chinook dogs are loyal and affectionate and always ready to help you in any jobs. They are eager to learn and accomplish something.
They love children and it is hard for children not to love them back too!
Chinooks used to work as sled dogs in groups so they behave well with other dogs.
They are now ranked as 175th most popular dog breed by AKC.
Appearance
Chinook dogs have an athletic and strong body that is built for speed.
They have a big but surprisingly light body, which supports their job as racing dogs.
They have dark, almond-shaped eyes with black markings make a strong impression.
Chinook dogs look good in their natural condition so no trimming is needed.
They can weigh between 50 to 90 pounds with 22 to 26 inches in standing height.
These come in 11 colors recognized by AKC but only fawn, gray red, palomino, red gold, and silver fawn are standard. The standard markings include black masks, buff markings, or white markings.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to 50-90 pounds sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
Chinooks have a double medium long coat with a coarse outer coat and soft undercoat. Their coats are less dense when found in warmer climates. Daily brushing keeps them clean and their coat shiny.
Bathing is only needed occasionally or as needed.
Their nails grow fast so weekly trimming is recommended, with twice or three times a week for teeth brushing.
Exercise
Make time for about 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercises such as jogging, walking, pulling sleds, or hiking.
Training them is easy since they are very intelligent and willing to learn.
If sufficient exercise is not provided and their energy is not released they will not only get bored, they tend to dig, chew and be a bit destructive around the house.
Pet Crate Size
Pet Crates Direct recommends a 48" dog crate* for most adult Chinook dogs.
