Cardigan Welsh Corgis originated in the British Isles. They were one of the first breeds there, which some believe is up to 3,000 years ago! They were initially bred as farm guardians, but nowadays they are more often relied upon as companions. The name Corgi means “dwarf” in Welsh, which suits their short body. Before 1934, people mostly thought that the Welsh Corgi had only one breed - the Cardigan. After 1934 it was separated into two distinct breeds: the Cardigan and Pembroke.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Cardigan Welsh Corgi in 1935. These medium energy dogs are known as athletic, affectionate, loyal, smart, and never shy. They have a cheerful face that owners will appreciate while they accompany you at work or at home. They do well in training and have a loud bark when necessary. These instincts match their breeding as watchdog on the farm. Have no worries about leaving them with children or other dogs, they are a well mannered breed. They are ranked by the AKC as the 69th most popular dog breed.
Appearance
Powerful, handsome, and intelligent would be your first impression of these Corgis. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has a long yet low body and a long tail. The average Corgi weighs about 25 to 38 pounds and is between 10.5 to 12.5 inches in height. Females are slightly smaller than the males. They have upright ears and round eyes which form their strong and sturdy head. Cardigans are double coated which can come in various colors. AKC recognized 5 colors and 7 markings of this dog breed.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
They like being outdoors so a quick brush once a day will help remove any dirt, extra water, mud, or shedding hair. They have a double coat which sheds seasonally, so grooming is especially important during these times in order to avoid dog hair ending up everywhere. Regular nail trimming, teeth brushing, and ear cleaning are all standard grooming needs that will keep your pet happy and healthy. They will easily gain weight if you don’t pay attention to their diet, but otherwise have excellent general health.
Exercise
Their obedience training is an easy task thanks to its intelligence. They are responsible guardians of your home. They love to walk, romp, and chase. They must have their play time outside or a daily run at least to avoid undesirable behavior problems from developing.
