Introduction

The Bloodhound lineage is traced back to feudal France where this breed was used for the purpose of tracking deer and wild boar.

It is very agile and clever, the Bloodhound has a strong sense of smell and is often used in high priority tasks such as law enforcement and rescue missions.

Due to its background and personality, the Bloodhound is often depicted in the media as a great tracking and searching dog. It is very gentle and friendly.

The Bloodhound is in the group of the Sagaces canine, which means "smart." The word refers to intelligence and its ability to sniff even the most delicate scents.

As a family pet, the Bloodhound requires a large amount of care and time.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Bloodhound in 1885.

These medium energy dogs are known as intelligent, powerful, sensitive, easygoing, and active dogs.

They are very good as a guardian or protector for your home.

The Bloodhound is the ideal pet for a house with a large yard or farm but it is not suitable as an apartment dog.

Fencing the garden or yard is a must-do because the Bloodhound is controlled by its sense of smell. This enchanting hound can trace vague clues through the scent. The impulse to follow scent will often take over training or knowledge of the dangers that may be facing them on their way.

As a puppy, the Bloodhound is curious.

Appearance

The adult Bloodhound male has a height of about 25-27 inches (64-69 cm) and weighs about 90-110 lbs (41-50 kg). The female has a height of about 22-25 inches (58-64 cm) and weighs 80-100 lbs (36-45 kg).

The Bloodhound has a loose coat and thin fur. It has wrinkles on the neck and head area. Wrinkles and loose coat are called dewlap. Dewlap has a long, distant and almost touches the ears, which helps the nose to hold the scent and trap it there.

The classic bloodhound is quite paradoxical. It is obedient, yet stubborn. It is also firm, but not confrontational, friendly, but careful. It needs a little time to warm up to know someone.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

Since it is a big dog, owners need to take care of the dog carefully.

For its grooming, it needs to be cleaned regularly by brushing its’ hair to prevent debris from outdoor activity.

The nails need to be cut regularly to avoid overgrowth and cracking.

The ears also must be checked to prevent it from wax and debris that may cause infection.

Owners are encouraged to brush its teeth regularly.

Exercise

This dog is a really sensitive and active dog. So, you will need extra time to train this dog. Training using rope is encouraged when it is still young. After chasing the scent, a Bloodhound can rampage, so rope training is required early on.

A Bloodhound needs to walk and can walk for miles. This breed is definitely suitable for the type of person who loves to exercise.

Cage training is always advisable to help potty training, as well as to keep the owners’ belongings from their damaging bites. The Bloodhound likes to chew even as an adult dog and it is very important to provide toys.
