Introduction
The Bichon Frise is a small breed with medium energy. In French, it is pronounced as bee-shon-free-zay which means "fluffy white dog." They originated from Spain, the Mediterranean area and were often used as sailing companions.
They gained their popularity due to their acceptance within the French and Spanish royal families. If you meet Bichon Frise dogs, you may get the urge to touch and cuddle them, and they will totally love it!
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Bichon Frise in 1972. These medium energy dogs are known as merry, cheerful, gentle-mannered, and affectionate. Just imagine a fairy tale princess' soul in a dog's body.
Since they were bred to be companion dogs, they behave well with kids young or old (and of course adults). Bichon Frise dogs do well with kids because they have lots of energy, they are playful, yet gentle so they rarely do harm. The Bichon Frise is hypoallergenic.
Appearance
Bichon Frise dogs weigh from 10-20 lbs with a 9-12 inch standing height. Their black nose, dark round eyes, curly hair, and long tail make them a very adorable breed.
They have a soft and dense coat but the outer coat is often coarser and curlier. Their tail is often trimmed to make it longer in appearance. AKC recognized their standard color as white, white & apricot, white & buff, and white & cream, without any markings.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to size sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
The Bichon Frise’s hair grows continually but does not shed. Grooming is needed infrequently but daily brushing is recommended. At least once a month, they should get a haircut and a bath.
Nails are treated the same as most other breeds of dogs, which should be trimmed regularly to avoid cracking and overgrowth. Check their ears to remove any debris or wax in order to avoid infection. Brushing their teeth regularly is also good for their oral health.
Exercise
These dogs are easily trainable and love to perform in front of people. They also like to be praised and cuddled. They demand love from their owners so do not be surprised if sometimes they will suddenly experience energy bursts and sprint around the house.
It is a sign that they want you to pay attention to them. They also like water so be sure to include this in your daily walks, jogs or other forms of exercise.
Pet Crate Size
Pet Crates Direct recommends 24” dog crates* for most adult Bichon Frise.
